The Paint Horse is one of America's most beloved native breeds. The descendant of spotted horses introduced by the Spanish Conquistadors, he ran wild for years on the Western plains. By the early 1800s, the Paint was the chosen mount of many Native Americans, especially the Comanches. More recently, this colourful and versatile equine became popular among cowboys.
Although he is most easily recognised by his colourful coat, today's registered American Paint Horse often has Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred blood, with distinctive stock horse conformation.
