Named 'Reckless' by Marines fighting in the Korean War, a little Mongolian mare began her military career as a simple pack horse and ended with the rank of Sergeant.

Tasked with carrying heavy ammunition to the Marines at the front lines, at the Battle of Outpost Vegas in March 1953, Reckless carried almost five tons of ammunition over the course of a few days through 'no man's land' to the frontlines and also carried wounded soldiers to safety.

This brave mare was awarded many honours, including two Purple Hearts, a Presidential Unit Citation with star, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

The ribbons on Sgt. Reckless' dress sheet all have a special meaning, representing all of the awards she was honored with. On her shoulder, she has a French Fourragere that the 5th Marines earned in World War I. The chevrons at the end of her name on the blanket show her Staff Sergeant status.
