Built primarily for the construction industry, the Mark 1 Excavator was JCB's first mainstream machine to combine the backhoe and major loader together. A total of 550 machines were built during the period 1954 to 1957, of which it is believed only 7 were built with a front mounted compressor.

It is widely held that Joseph Cyril Bamford (Mr JCB) invented Europe's first backhoe loader with this machine. Over 50 years later, JCB continues to be the world's number one manufacturer of backhoe loaders.
